Setting up a Kite is the first thing you need to learn when learning how to Kiteboard. This lesson will teach you how to unfurl the kite, blow it up, attach the strings and double-check for safety.

Blowing up the kite

Firstly you have to find a large open space to set up the kite, and face the kite downwind. Once you have done this you can start by finding the inflate and deflate valves. (these will vary between kites) In most modern kites the valves will be two in one. Now blow out any dirt or sand in your air pump, plug it into the inflate valve and start pumping. The kite should unfurl and inflate smoothly, but if there are any folds while inflating be sure to remove them immediately as they can cause issues later on. Make sure the bridles are not tangled in the kite but are on top of the kite. You can know if you have inflated the kite properly through a number of ways: checking the pressure gauge and psi on your pump, bending the leading edge towards the wingtip and gripping and lightly squeezing the leading edge.

Checking the pressure gauge: On the average pump there will be a pressure indicator that uses psi, you can check what psi to pump to from the recommended pressure that is usually provided on the kite.

Bending the leading edge: If you bend the leading edge towards the wingtip, if there are bends within the fabric of the leading edge then you need to inflate the kite more.

Gripping the leading edge: If you grip and squeeze the leading edge it should be tough and firm if you can easily squeeze the leading edge then you need to inflate the kite more.

Remove the pump and cover the inflation valve and you are ready to begin setting up the strings.
